Questions
1. As a child, can you remember a person who made you feel safe, valued, or cared for?
What did they do that had that effect on you?
2. Can you remember a time or environment that made you feel fear, anxiety, or uncertainty?
How did that affect how you thought or behaved?
3. What is one intentional way you can create a better environment for the person sitting across from you this week?
Your Mission This Week
Part 1
Once each day, reach out to each other—by phone, in person, or however you choose—and say something encouraging that you would not normally say. Write it down and place it in a jar. If you say something negative during the week, write that down as well and place it in the jar. At the end of the week, sit down together, empty the jar, and talk about what was said and how it affected each of you.
It is important that you write these down and keep them. Do not rely on memory.
Part 2
Before the week ends, preferably toward the end of the week, together, go up to one person—at the gym, the grocery store, the parking lot, maybe church—and give them a genuine compliment.
It can be something simple:
“I like your shirt.”
“I just wanted to say hello and hopefully bring a smile to your face.”
“It’s a pretty day. I hope you get to enjoy it.”
When you see the impact on someone else, it becomes clear how powerful simple words and actions can be. And by doing this together, you will begin to realize how strong your unit is becoming, and how you as a unit can affect other people’s lives. Once a week, simply say something kind to someone.
Final Step and Guidance
This process will only work if you trust it. Write things down. Follow through. Take time at the end of the week to sit together and talk. Turn off distractions. Sit down—coffee, iced tea, or even ice cream. Be humble with each other. Talk for a few minutes about what you experienced—what helped, what didn’t, and how you affected each other.
Before You Begin
Pray together. Ask the Lord for wisdom, understanding, and protection.
End of the Week
Empty what you’ve written down. Look at it together. Talk honestly.
The Point
If you do it, it will work.
