The Long Haul
Read the story first: The Long Haul.
Nugget of Wisdom
Responsibility is not something you can hand off. When others depend on you, their safety is in your hands.
First General Order
Before beginning, come together as a group to briefly discuss prayer needs and pray for God's guidance, wisdom, and protection over this time.
Mission
Think back to a time in your childhood or early life when responsibility was placed on you, or when someone failed to carry the responsibility they were given. Was there a moment where you or someone else was depending on another person, and something went wrong? Tell that story.
Mission Execution
Sit face to face with no distractions, hold hands, and maintain eye contact. As one speaks, the other listens fully without interruption, without correcting, and without trying to fix anything. As the receiver, your role is not to judge, but to understand the emotion behind what is being said. If you feel comfortable, close your eyes at times to help you focus, listen deeply, and feel what your partner is feeling. Learn to recognize their emotions, how they process, and how they experience the moment. Take a few minutes each and do not rush the process. Be fully present with each other. This is not about being right, it is about being known, understood, and becoming one with each other.
Questions
Have you ever been in a situation where someone else’s responsibility directly affected your safety or well-being? How did that make you feel?
Have there been times in your life where you were responsible for others and did not take it as seriously as you should have? What did you learn from that?
In your life, have there been times when you felt the need to protect someone, even if it could have cost you personally? What did that reveal about your character and your priorities?
Do you find yourself today trusting others easily, or do you tend to stay more guarded because of past experiences?
As you listened to your partner’s story, what emotions did you hear beneath their words? Were you able to stay present without judging or trying to fix anything?
Where in your life today do others depend on you? Are you fully aware of the weight of that responsibility?
This Week’s Mission
This week’s mission will be two-part.
Part one, I want you to focus on each other. Once each day, intentionally reach out and connect. Call, talk, or sit together, but make certain you understand what the other person needs. Write those needs down on a small slip of paper and place it in a jar. At the end of the day, ask yourself if you were able to meet those needs. Do not rely on memory. Write it down. At the end of the week, empty the jar together and look at what was asked and what was completed. See how well you facilitated each other.
Part two is a practical application. Together, choose someone you will call during the week. There does not need to be a deep reason. You can simply tell them you made a small bet with each other that you would call at a specific time and see if they answer. Keep it light so they can play along.
Agree on a specific time and follow through for a couple of days. Then on Thursday, intentionally do not call. On Friday, when you call again, pay attention to their response. Notice if they mention it, if they were expecting the call, or if it mattered to them.
At the end of the week, talk together about what you observed. How quickly did that simple commitment begin to matter? How did it feel to miss it? What did you notice in the other person’s response?
Now bring it back to your relationship. Understand how important the commitments you make to each other truly are. Make a decision together not to become careless, lackadaisical, or complacent with one another.
Prayer Focus
As you close in prayer this week, include this in your own words: Father, this is the person you have trusted me with. Allow my commitments to be deep and meaningful. Guard my heart and strengthen my ability to fulfill my commitments.
