Marriage is often described as a partnership, a friendship, or a union. All of those things are true. But if we are honest, marriage can also feel like a battlefield.

Two people who once stood side by side slowly begin to dig foxholes. Words become weapons. Silence becomes armor. Small disagreements become grenades thrown across a line that neither side remembers drawing.

At first, neither person intends for it to happen. Life brings pressure — work, children, money, exhaustion, responsibilities. Slowly the two people who once protected each other begin protecting themselves from each other.

You stop listening carefully. You start defending yourself more than understanding the other.

And before long, the person you once promised to protect is the person you are fighting.

The tragedy is that most of the time neither person truly wants to win that battle. If one wins, both lose.

Because marriage was never meant to be a battlefield.

It was meant to be two people standing shoulder to shoulder facing the world together, not two people hiding in foxholes throwing grenades at the person they once loved.

The lesson is simple, but difficult.

When you feel the battle beginning, climb out of the foxhole.

Walk across the field.

And remember why you stood beside that person in the first place.
